PROVENANCE
The Sam Sawtelle papers were donated to University Archives & Special Collections in the Joseph P. Healey Library at UMass Boston by Sam Sawtelle in March 1983.
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Sam Sawtelle became Principle Mechanical Engineer for the City of Boston in 1951. A World War II veteran, Sawtelle was president of Esquire Plumbing and Heating Company and was active in a number of professional associations. Sawtelle was a Trustee of the University of Massachusetts (1978-1980). Sawtelle’s service to the Dorchester community has included being an active member of the Associate Board of Directors of Carney Hospital and the Dorchester Allied Veterans Council, chairing a number of committees, and being president of Dorchester United Neighborhoods Association and the Cedar Grove Association. He helped run the celebration of Dorchester’s 350th year and a number of Dorchester Days.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
These papers include correspondence, proposals, newsletters, publications, and other records that document the concerns and activities of Sawtelle and the organizations in which he has been involved. There are also some personal papers.
