About the collections

Welcome to the Open Archives Digital Collections of the University of Massachusetts Boston's Joseph P. Healey Library.

University Archives & Special Collections in the Joseph P. Healey Library at the University of Massachusetts Boston was established in 1981 as a repository to collect archival material in subject areas of interest to the university, as well as the records of the university itself.

The mission and history of the University of Massachusetts Boston guide the collection policies of University Archives & Special Collections, with the university’s urban mission and strong support of community service reflected in the records of and related to urban planning, social welfare, social action, alternative movements, community organizations, war and social consequence, and local history related to neighboring communities.

The Archives creates digital collections and makes them available online in order to:

  • enhance scholarship and research across disciplines
  • increase access to the materials in our archival storage
  • support the teaching and learning activities of the University's faculty and students
  • promote lifelong learning by the residents of Massachusetts and the general public worldwide

Through the application of technological and content standards, University Archives & Special Collections preserves, invites the use of, and facilitates ready access to, its digital collections.

We invite you to explore our collections, activities and resources here in the Open Archives Digital Collections site, through postings of events, project and activities on our Open Archives Blog, and through the Massachusetts Studies social network. Your participation and feedback in all of these are welcome.

You are also welcome to visit to pursue archival research onsite and to enjoy our periodic exhibits. University Archives and Special Collections is located on the 5th Floor of the Joseph P. Healey Library at the University of Massachusetts Boston. We are open for onsite research between 10 am and 4 pm weekdays when the campus is open. Please contact library.archives@umb.edu to schedule an appointment or for reference assistance.
